Linguistic, Extralinguistic and Paralinguistic Abilities in Patients with Right Hemisphere Damage (RHD)

چکیده
Patients with right hemisphere damage (RHD) often show communicative-pragmatic deficits involving different expressive modalities, i.e. linguistic, extralinguistic and paralinguistic. Most previous research has evaluated pragmatic ability using linguistic tasks only, while the extralinguistic aspects of communication have received less attention. The aim of the present study was to provide a multifocal assessment of communicative abilities in RHD patients, describing their communicative impairment and abilities, both in comprehension and production. The study revealed communicative deficits in RHD patients in all the expressive modalities investigated, i.e. linguistic, extralinguistic and paralinguistic, with patients performing worse in extralinguistic tasks than in linguistic tasks.

Comparison of right hemisphere damage patients and normal adults in some linguistic performances
Introduction: According to some evidence, damage to the right hemisphere leads to impaired linguistic and cognitive functions. Patients with right hemisphere damage (RHD) experience difficulties at different levels of language. Assessing and diagnosing language disorders in RHD patients help to plan treatment programs. Therefore, the present study investigated some of the language functions in ...
متن کاملThe assessment of pragmatics in Iranian patients with right brain damage
BACKGROUND Pragmatics is appropriate use of language across a variety of social contexts that provides accurate interpretation of intentions. The occurrence of the right hemisphere lesions can interfere with pragmatic abilities, and particularly with the processing of nonliteral speech acts. METHODS Since the objective of this study was to assess different aspects of pragmatic competence in t...
متن کاملNeuropragmatics: Extralinguistic pragmatic ability is better preserved in left-hemisphere-damaged patients than in right-hemisphere-damaged patients.
The aim of the present study is to compare the pragmatic ability of right- and left-hemisphere-damaged patients excluding the possible interference of linguistic deficits. To this aim, we study extralinguistic communication, that is communication performed only through gestures. The Cognitive Pragmatics Theory provides the theoretical framework: it predicts a gradient of difficulty in the compr...
متن کاملCommunicative-Pragmatic Treatment in Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study
This paper aims to verify the efficacy of Cognitive Pragmatic Treatment (CPT), a new remediation training for the improvement of the communicative-pragmatic abilities, in patients with schizophrenia. The CPT program is made up of 20 group sessions, focused on a number of communication modalities, i.e., linguistic, extralinguistic and paralinguistic, theory of mind (ToM) and other cognitive func...
متن کاملTheory of mind and the right cerebral hemisphere: refining the scope of impairment.
The neuropsychological and functional characterisation of mental state attribution ("theory of mind" (ToM)) has been the focus of several recent studies. The literature contains opposing views on the functional specificity of ToM and on the neuroanatomical structures most relevant to ToM. Studies with brain-lesioned patients have consistently found ToM deficits associated with unilateral right ...
